An eight-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan starts hearing petitions against a yet-to-be-passed law that curtails the powers of the chief justice of Pakistan. Chief Justice Omer Ata Bandiyal is himself heading the handpicked judges bench that is likely to suspend the law. Pakistan’s largest lawyer’s body Pakistan Bar Council has announced a protest against the constitution of the bench by the chief justice declaring it an infringement of parliamentary powers. The judges have for now arisen to consult each other after announcing to formally issue notices to the government and other parties to the case.
