45 years after sentencing to death the legendary politician prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in a controversial judicial verdict, now remembered as a “judicial murder” the top judges of Pakistani Supreme Court are meeting next week to take up an 11 years old presidential reference that sought review of the conviction. Bhutto was hanged to death on 4 April 1979 in a highly controversial murder case three years after the imposition of martial law by General Zia Ul Haq in 1977. The death sentence was excuted even as the verdict by a majority of 4 to 3 judges. Historians remember it as judicial murder and a deep scar on the face of Pakistan’s top court since then. The verdict is not allowed to be cited in the courts as a precedence.
#MJtv explains the history and legal aspects of the dramatic proceedings next week that are likely to end with even more dramatic verdict that can become a milestone in Pakistan’s tumultuous civil military relations history.
