In a historic judgement Pakistan’s Supreme Court has rejected army’s claim of inheriting capital’s precious Margalla Hills from British colonial army in 1910 as a grass land for military horses. The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa upheld a 2022 verdict by Islamabad High Court authored by the then chief Athar Minallah (now a Supreme Court judge) wherein it was held that the Margalla Hills were actually part of an officially notified National Park area under a 1979 law that explicitly barred any commercial activity which could harm natural beauty and environment of the area. The apex court declared all the rent agreements of food outlets with the capital’s development authority and the army and handed over the control of margalla hills to Islamabad Wildlife Life Management Board constituted under 1979 law but became functional only in 2015. Even after winning a historic battle the wild life management board is faced with actually demarcation of the national park area around which army, navy and airforce have built their headquarters quarters and are apparently not allowing any demarcation of their boundaries with the national park.
