In a sudden and desperate move the government has declared its intentions to impose a ban on parliament’s single largest political party – Pakistan Tehrik e Insaf (PTI). Government’s information minister announced that it would invoke Article 17(2) of the constitution to first issue a declaration in this regard and then send the same to Supreme Court within next 15 days as required by the constitution. Section 212 of the Election Act 2017 states that once a political party is banned its elected members in all the assemblies stand disqualified from being elected for the remaining period of their respective assemblies.

Matiullah Jan #MJtv explains the legal consequences of the whole process and also talks exclusively to Bartister Aitzaz Ahsan, Pakistan’s top constitutional lawyer.
