Supreme Court of Pakistan will hear on 10 Nov 23 appeals of late dictator General Pervez Musharraf against his conviction in a high treason case. A special tribunal constituted by the government in 2014 sentenced Musharraf to death by hanging on five counts. Musharraf in his capacity as army chief and president of the country proclaimed martial law on 03 Nov 2007 wherein he sent packing over 60 superior court judges to avoid an adverse verdict against himself. After a historic lawyers movement Musharraf was forced to resign and all judges were restored who sat as full court to declare MUSHARRAF’s actions as high treason and the then government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered for his trial which culminated into a death verdict. Musharraf challenged his conviction but in the meantime three judges from Lahore High Court (including Justice Muzahir Naqvi, now in Supreme Court) suddenly took up a petition and declared the verdict against Gen Musharraf as unconstitutional in an attempt to make it controversial. Pakistan Bar Council and Rawalpindi Bar Association have also challenged before the apex court that controversial verdict of the Lahore High Court and the same will be heard on Nov 10 alongside MUSHARRAF’s appeal. By the time the death sentence was announced Musharraf had already left the country with the help of the then army chief General Raheel Sharif for medical treatment in London. #MJtv analysis the 10 Nov hearing and it’s possible conclusions.
