Top court reconsiders own verdict to end life-time election ban on politicians including ex premier

A seven member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa started re-examining its own verdict that imposed life time election ban on politicians for lying on oath. The ban primarily came via interpretation of the constitution during times of what many remember as judicial engineering through the famous but controversial Panama case trial that disqualified the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif. To undo that life time disqualification of Nawaz Sharif the parliament enacted a law that reduced the life time election ban to only five years enabling Sharif to contest the forthcoming general elections on 08 Feb 24. Whether the apex court judgement will prevail over the parliaments legislation is the question now being addressed by the Supreme Court with only 8 days to go before election tribunals finalise the names of election candidates in Pakistan.
